Lagos State Government has been rated by the Nigeria National Committee of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) as the best in terms of prompt payment of WASSCE registration fees and regular training of its teaching staff.
The commendation was made by the Chairman of the Nigeria National Committee of the West African Examinations Council, Mrs. Anne Okwonkwo during a courtesy call on Governor Akiwunmi Ambode at the Secretariat, Alausa.
Mrs. Okonkwo noted that Lagos State government should be commended for its huge investment in education which had helped to increase the performance of the students from the State in external examinations from 45% in previous years to the present 54.7% within a short period of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode-led administration.
She stated that records of the Committee indicated that Lagos remained one of the first states in the federation that accepted to partner with the Council in the training of its teachers , adding that the training and retraining of teachers from the State and other investment in education has significantly impacted on the quality of teaching /learning and students performance, urging other states to emulate Lagos State by implementing sustainable educational policies that could promote the growth of education.
The Chairman revealed that the 54th Annual meeting of the NNC would be held in the State from Thursday, 1st December to Friday, 2nd December, 2016, adding that the body would present WAEC Endowment Fund Prize Books to three best State schools in the May/June 2015 WASCE.
While noting that the examinations body has continued to maintain excellence in carrying out its mandate in spite of the prevailing economic recession, the Chairman called on the State government to redeem its earlier pledge to construct an access road between the WAEC Ojo Satellite Office and Old Ojo road by Awori College to enhance smooth transportation of officials and examination materials during exams period.
In his response, Governor Ambode represented by his deputy, Dr. Idiat Oluranti Adebule, assured the Committee that the State government would continue to implement sustainable educational policies that will make education in the State rank among the best in the world.
