The Lagos State House of Assembly has commended the entire Lagosians for their cooperation, sensitivity and proactive response to government’s efforts while curbing the Ebola virus that threatened the nation’s health system in July 2014.
This statement came in the wake of declaration by the World Health Organisation that Nigeria is now Ebola free country 42 days after the last isolated person was discharged and given clean bill of health.
In the statement issued by the spokesperson of the House Hon Segun Olulade,
the Lagos Assembly noted that rapid response by the government, dissemination of awareness information by civil society organisations and health workers and prayers of the nation were largely responsible for success recorded at curbing the virus which has led to the World health Organisation (WHO) declaring Nigeria a country free of Ebola virus.
Olulade said the leadership exampled demonstrated by Lagos State government is another testimony to the fact that Lagos State is really a centre of excellence in all ramifications, and another pointer to the fact that APC led government across the nation are people oriented governments.
“The Ebola virus touched Lagos and Rivers states (both APC states) and the rapid response of the Governors of both states were a major factor at stopping the spread of the virus. How best can we have best example in leadership and governance than to be sensitive to the protection of lives of our people?”, Olulade said.
The Epe Constituency II representative also noted that the leadership example showed by Lagos State government is not stopping in Nigeria alone in the wake of readiness of the State to dispatch health workers to support Sierra Leone at stemming the scourge. Olulade said that Lagos State has capacity to respond to any external challenge with the cooperation of Lagosians.
Olulade also advised that in spite of the pronouncement of Nigeria as Ebola free by WHO, the citizens should not lower their guards against Ebola and other vulnerable diseases by ensuring regular wash of hands and keeping their surroundings clean at all time.
In conclusion, he commended the health workers across Lagos for their bravery during a period when fear enveloped the nation. He also commended communities groups, NGOs, market associations, students and the private sector for their contributions at ensuring a stable society while the scoure lasted.
