The Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem has declared that mediation as an alternative to dispute resolution is a tool that can foster global peace among citizens of the world.
He made the assertion while speaking at a press briefing organised the Citizens Mediation Centre to commemorate the 2016 United Nations International Day of Peace with the theme, “Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace”.
The Attorney General, who was represented by the Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Justice, Mrs. Funlola Odunlami noted that everyone has a role to play in maintaining peace in his/her neighbourhood, adding that all segments of society have to work together to ensure that peace thrives in the society.
He stated that the State Government has demonstrated its commitment to peace by putting in place several mechanisms to foster peaceful co-existence in the State, saying “The State Government recognises the fact that Lagos as a commercial nerve centre of sub-saharan Africa serves as a convergence point for business, hospitality and tourism.”
Adeniji hinted that mechanisms put in place by the government include donation of vehicles to the Police for the purpose of securing lives and property, introduction of DNA forensic laboratory to archive blood samples of criminals among others.
The Attorney General further stated that mediation is a process that has become globally accepted and conforms to the constitutional responsibility of all levels of government to promote peace within their domain.
