Bolanle Ambode Advises Women, Couples on Child Births

Wife of the Lagos State Governor, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode has advised women and couples in the State who had experienced pregnancy and infant loss to put the past behind them and march ahead with hope and faith, saying “though it may be difficult, but that is the only way to move on”.

She gave the advice while speaking at the Pregnancy and Baby Loss Awareness Summit organized by Beibei Haven Foundation, in collaboration with Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, last weekend at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Mrs. Ambode represented by Dr. (Mrs.) Ibironke Sodeinde, former Permanent Secretary Lagos State Primary Health Care Board said the loss of a pregnancy, not to mention that of a child, is an unforgettable tragedy which no woman or couple should experience.

She therefore prayed that the Almighty GOD protect and perfect all situations around the lives of every pregnant woman and couples with children, not only in the State but in the whole country.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon Lola Akande, disclosed that October 15th is International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day, created to provide support, education and awareness for those suffering or may know someone who had suffered a miscarriage, an ectopic pregnancy, a still birth or the loss of an infant.

According to her, statistics shows that 1 out of 4 pregnancies will be lost during pregnancy. And that many parents, grandparents, siblings, relatives and friends find that being able to honour their babies on a special day of remembrance helps them on their journey to overcome their grief.

Akande commended the founder of Beibei Haven Foundation, Mrs. Omotade Alalade for having the mettle to turn her traumatic personal experience to a pleasant one for other women who grieve in silence, by educating and encouraging them on how to manage the situation through the assistance of experienced medical practitioners and women who have had similar experience in the past.

In her remarks, Mrs. Alalade said her personal experience led to the creation of Beibei Haven Foundation with the mandate to support women and couples through their journey from trying to conceive to parenthood, adding that the Summit reached out to many women who have gone through the loss to support them and let them know that they are not alone.

The Summit, with more than 400 people in attendance, offered a crucial opportunity for bereaved people to talk openly about their experiences. Three women; Rev. Laurie Idahosa, Mrs. Masidat Kassim and Mrs. Iyadunni Gbadebo who had gone through pregnancy and baby loss shared their experiences while a medical practitioner Dr. Adejuwon Alabi spoke about the medical side of a miscarriage while a mentor from the Foundation talked about coping after a pregnancy baby loss.
