PRESS STATEMENT TUESDAY 04-11-2014
The Lagos State House of Assembly has commended the Nigerian judiciary over the ruling affirming Rt. Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal as the substantive Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives.
The call was made in the wake of court ruling that affirms that Mr Speaker remains the head of the lower chamber as the ruling party, the PDP, tried to remove the Speaker following his defection to the All Progressives Congress last week.
In the statement released by the spokesperson of the House Hon Segun Olulade, the Nigerian judiciary has proven that judgment can truly be goten by Nigerians in the array of impunity coming from the Peoples’ Democratic Party led government. Olulade said that the judiciary has upheld the hope of the nation, and it is the institution that stands as the protector of our hard earned democracy given its vulnerability to disruptions by the ego driven and lawless ruling party and its government.
“It is unthinkable, petty, unreasonable and insensitive approach to attempt to remove Mr Speaker because he crossed to the progressive party. Just few weeks ago, Governor Mimiko of Ondo State, who was the only Governor of the Labour Party, dumped the party to a gallows for PDP and heaven did not fall. Why will the present government go so petty at using the security agency that belongs to all of us to threaten Tambuwal’s safety plus the ploy to remove him by the PDP Lawmakers in the House”, Olulade said.
The Epe Constituency II representative said most unimaginable errors have occurred under the present administration than all other administration put together since Nigeria’s independence. He said Nigeria has been made a laughing stock in the comity of nations considering spate of atrocities and petty acts of impunity and lawlessness by the harbinger of powers and custodians of our democracy and freedom.
Olulade said were it not for the courage demonstrated by our judicial system, the nation would have been plunged into a deep crisis capable of consuming democratic system and thus a threat to our existence as a nation.
I commend the judiciary and hope that PDP Lawmakers in the House of Representatives will play by the rule of the game to avoid collapse in the democratic process.
“The attempt by the PDP power bloc to divide and damage the Federal legislative House like it did in Edo and Rivers states will be met with stiff resistance by Nigerians. If the party is so sure they have the popularity to win free and fair elections, I think these useless and baseless arm-twisting should stop”, Olulade concluded.
